Nearly 60% of 2018 Holiday Spending to Happen Online: Report

Digital commerce continues to account for an increasing chunk of holiday revenue. This year 57 percent of total spend will take place online, compared to 36 percent in stores, according to a report from Deloitte. Over the past four years, the global consultancy said in the 2018 Deloitte Holiday Retail Survey, in-store sales during the holidays have dropped 10 percent as consumers increasingly turn to their PCs, phones and tablets to complete purchases.

Online purchases via mobile device will also continue to rise, the report said. PCs are still the device consumers use most to make the actual purchase. Nearly 80 percent of shoppers plan to make online purchases using a desktop or laptop, while 67 percent said they will buy holiday gifts on their phones (up from 59 percent last year. The report predicts that 34 percent of all holiday spending (including in-store) will take place on PCs, however, are still the device consumers use most to make the actual purchase.
